A Weekend In Tuscany?

Looking at the photo of this colourful farmhouse style building basking in late evening sunlight you would be forgiven for thinking that Marion and I spent our weekend in the Tuscan hills rather than on the outskirts of Nottingham. We were at Langar Hall for the 21st birthday party of our old friends David and Janet Wareing's daughter Lizzie. And what a great time we had there.

Here are David and Janet with son William and daughter Lizzie. The hotel is highly recommended and provides the ultimate in comfort and relaxation. We had a superb meal with excellent service and fine wines so we must thank David and Janet for their fantastic hospitality.

I had to have a smile when I took a walk (or a hobble) in the hotel grounds. The hotel is in some lovely countryside but the owners (understandably) take no responsibility for what happens.

Being in the East Midlands gave us the opportunity to visit our all time favourite place. National Trust run Hardwick Hall (which you can see perched on the hillside above the M1 just south of Sheffield) is a fabulous place. Not only for its incredible architecture and magnificent 16th century furniture but also for its story. Bess of Hardwick started life as a humble maid servant but after, three marriages, ended up as the most powerful woman in England beside Queen Elizabeth. The place leaks atmosphere and is a must to any history lover.

To give you a taste of the interior of the place. Here is one of the panels that run around the top of the great hall. Everything about it is on a grand scale.

Unlike Liverpool who are playing Wigan tonight and are anything but grand. Just can't get excited about the thought of it.Unlike when my all time favourite Robbie Fowler was a regular in the team. Watch this and weep.
